Sailing and Racing

Most sailing for members takes place on the tidal waters of Morecambe Bay from 2 slipways projecting out from the promenade by our prominent race office. This all across the road from the Town Hall.

The Clubhouse is close by on Back Calton Street with the dinghy compound at the far end of that street.

The bay is noted for its so-called dangerous, fast flowing tidal currents but once introduced to these and then practised in how to handle them they add to the enjoyment of exciting sailing against the fine backdrop of the Lake District hills. Sailing times vary according to the time of high tide and we usually manage about two hours sailing each side of the high tide. Prevailing winds are generally from the south round to a north west direction. All sailing is accompanied by at least one safety boat manned by qualified crew.

Members can sail their own dinghies which can be stored in the compound which is permanently alarmed. There are also club-owned dinghies available to suitably experienced members at £5 per person. These include:

  • 3 x Lasers with variable sail areas
  • 3 x Toppers
  • 2 x Wayfarers
  • 2 x Enterprises
  • 1 x Hartley 12 (priority to youth and female members)
  • Members can also go out with an experienced helm in the Wayfarers and Enterprises.

The kit store has longjohn wetsuits, sailing suits, buoyancy aids for use free by members.

The Clubhouse has toilets, changing rooms with showers and a galley for refreshments.

Sunday is traditionally when dinghy racing is held.

Taster sessions, training and RYA Dinghy Sailing Courses are available mainly at weekends.

Occasionally short dinghy cruises are organised eg to Heysham or Arnside.

RYA POWERBOAT courses organised by our instructors allow members to become qualified and then undertake safety boat duties.

MSC is also affiliated to Killington Sailing Association and sailing is organised there midweek and in holiday periods. Here sailing is in a more confined area with no tide to worry about and sailing sessions here help increase confidence. We use KSA dinghies and sometimes take our own Club dinghies. There is full use of toilets, changing rooms and refreshment area.

Experienced Club sailors will travel to regattas at other local Clubs or further afield.

MSC hosts a weekend Club regatta each year usually in September.
